How to Play Texas Hold'em

Texas hold’em is one of the simplest and most popular forms of poker to play. If you can understand the rank of hands, you can play Texas hold’em. While the no-limit variety of Texas hold’em is the one most commonly seen on television, you can also play hold’em in fixed-limit or pot-limit structures. The game can be played in both cash-game and poker tournament format.

Basic Rules of Texas Hold’em

The goal of Texas hold’em is to make your best five-card poker hand using a combination of two hole cards dealt to each player and five cards on a community board which all players share. The betting is driven by two forced bets, called blinds.

The small blind is typically half a standard bet, while the big blind is a full bet. The player left of the dealer position, called the button, puts in the small blind and the player to the left of the small blind puts in the big blind. The button and blinds rotate after every hand.

The Play of the Hand

In the first “pre-flop” round, players look at their two cards and decide if they want to call the big blind, fold or raise. Action continues clockwise around the table until it gets back to the big blind, who may raise himself if no one has raised before him.

Once all players have acted, a three-card flop is put in the middle. Starting to the left of the button, players now have the option to bet or check. Proceeding clockwise, players can check or bet if there has been no bet, raise, call or fold if someone has bet.

Once action is complete, the dealer lays a fourth card (“the turn”) on the table. Another round of betting ensues, and then a fifth card (“the river”) is laid down. A final round of betting and all players who have called all bets show down their hand. The best five-card hand using any combination of a player’s two hole cards and the community cards wins the pot.
